How to Load an Upright Piano into a Moving Truck

How to load an upright piano into a moving truck

When trucking an upright piano, frequently you will have to lift it over a curb in order to get to the truck’s ramp or lift-gate. Using our 4 wheel piano dolly and a humpstrap, this is an easy task of just lifting the piano on the dolly over it as can be seen in the 2 pictures below.

You can use the humpstrap to guide a dollied piano onto a ramp and then pull it right up with a couple of people pushing from the bottom.

Below is shown a picture of the wrong way to humpstrap a dollied piano because the strap around the piano’s leg can break it.

When moving a small piano on a ramp up onto or off of a truck, 3 or 4 men can just push and pull it even without a humpstrap.

Once on the truck, the piano is padded over its top, back and front and dismounted from the dolly.

Then, it is faced keyboard side to the wall and secured to the wall with double or triple strapping. The keyboard side faces the wall in order to protect it from being scratched by the movers or by other furniture braced against it as the truck moves. Double or triple strapping assures that it won’t come loose during transport.

Now the piano can be safely trucked if you don’t drive like a madman. Remember, if this piano breaks loose when accelerating, it can fly off of the truck into following traffic! If it breaks loose when you’re braking hard, it can come forward fast and crush someone in the cab!

Unless you feel confident you can manage the entire piano moving operation with a bunch of friends, don’t rink costly property damage or even costlier personal injury. Get free moving quotes from professional piano movers to see how much they will charge you for the job.
