How to Pack a China Cabinet for Moving

Find put how to pack a china cabinet safely and efficiently.

Moving a china cabinet is a great challenge – to ensure the safety of such a heavy, yet highly delicate item, you need to know the best techniques for packing and transporting it. Safe china cabinet moving starts with its proper preparation and full padding.

How to Prepare a China Cabinet for Moving

When moving a china cabinet with glass doors such as the one pictured below,  care must be taken to protect the glass just as well as the finish. Some china cabinets have an upper and a lower half which makes moving them easier to relocate than when they’re all in one piece.

When relocating a china cabinet, first take the glass and/or wooden shelves out, wrap them in a bundle separately, and put them inside one of the drawers to keep them with the china cabinet during transport.

Then, reverse any protruding door pulls to the inside of the cabinet door ( unscrew, reverse and re-screw them into the inside of the door) to make the door flush in front when it is closed. This prevents them from being snapped off during the move.

Some china cabinets have lower doors with drawers or shelves inside.

Remove the small shelves and wrap them in a pad. Put the bundle inside one of the drawers to keep them with the china cabinet during transport.

How to Wrap a China Cabinet for Moving

When the china cabinet is ready to be packed, drape a pad evenly over the top of the furniture, square off the sides and tape the wrapping in place.

Next, hang a pad over the center of the piece and tape it firmly in place leaving padding excess at the bottom to cover the legs later.

You can only cover the front and sides of the piece with the pad because the back does not have a finish that needs complete protection.

If you want to, you can hang a pad in back the same way as was done in front and tape it into place with the rest of the pads.

To pad the legs of the cabinet, it should be leaned over to its fulcrum balance point against the wall. When a piece is balanced on its fulcrum point, it can stand against the wall on its own. It’s actually nearly weightless for the mover.

Then a move can pad the legs and seal the tape by himself with the china cabinet leaning against the wall.

Finally, cardboard should be placed over the glass cabinet doors.

This well padded and cardboarded china cabinet is now ready for moving.
