How to Pack a Desk for Moving

Moving a desk is a simple process, but there are some specifics to pay attention to in order to avoid damage to your cherished furniture or to your property.

How to Prepare a Desk for Packing

When moving desks or secretaries the first thing to do is to remove and box up all their contents. If left in the desk these things will fly all over the place when it’s being tipped for moving up/down stairs.

If it’s a desk with a return, it must be disassembled and the hardware should be securely taped inside one of its drawers. The desk and its returns must be then completely padded. Be sure to tape the pads to secure them tightly to each piece. Do not allow the tape to touch the finish of the desk or its return so that there will be no tape residue damage.

How to Wrap a Desk for Moving

The following picture sequence shows the complete padding of a desk.

Two pads are draped evenly over the top and sides of the desk with some excess padding on the bottom to cover the legs later as shown below.

The padding does not fully cover the back of the desk because it won’t be needed. The desk can be also padded up from the bottom if you wanted to fully protect it all around.

Each side is folded squarely and taped as shown in the pictures below.

The wrapping is neatly taped all around the top edge and the middle a couple of times to secure the pads.

Next, the desk is bucked and lifted onto its side as shown in the pictures below.

The excess padding is wrapped around the desk’s legs.

The last step is to tape seal the two pads so they won’t slip apart during moving as shown below.

This desk is now well padded and ready to be carried to its destination.
As it’s being carried you can set it down in any position as it will be pad protected from scuffing and dirt.

How to Pack a Roll-Top Desk

If you’re moving a roll-top desk, your task will be a bit more complicated. Roll-top desks normally come apart into 2 pieces. You need to remove the roll top section first and fully pad it separately. Use bunched up newspaper packed tightly into a plastic bag – place it inside of the roll top to brace its slats so that they don’t shift around and the slats won’t come loose during transit. Then proceed to pack the other section of the desk as described above.
