How to Move a Butcher Block

Butcher blocks and kitchen islands are pretty heavy and very ungainly. They are extremely hard to carry because most of the weight is on top. It’s best to flip them upside down onto a dolly to more easily transport them. Padding the top before placing the butcher block on the dolly is not necessary but be sure to give it a good cleaning before putting it back into service again.

Putting a butcher block upside down on a 4 wheel dolly is the best way to transport it on flat terrain or up a ramp or over a curb.

When transporting the butcher block over stairs, however, use a locking belt to tie it tightly to the dolly. Then, a top man with a humpstrap (also slung under the dollied butcher block) and a bottom man lifting underneath can carry it fairly easily up or downstairs.
