How to Reverse Winding Packer’s Tape

How to reverse winding packing tape

Any item will pick up difficult-to-remove tape residue if you use packer’s tape on it with the sticky side down.

To reverse wind tape onto an item as a securing strap, stand the item up and wind tape around it with the sticky side out first – not allowing the sticky side to touch the item’s finish. Then, make the second tape pass in the regular way (turning the tape back over), carefully welding the two sticky surfaces together as shown in the picture below.

If you don’t quite weld the two sides evenly and some sticky is still not covered, then just twist the tape or use another piece of tape to cover that spot. This makes both sides of the doubled tape non-sticky.

Using this technique, the tape is tightly wound around the item so that it won’t slip off and so that the item’s lid is secured without leaving any sticky tape residue on it. Also, the tape won’t be exposed to irritate the mover’s hands.

This strong tape strap removes easily after you’re done moving by making a simple cut into it. When reverse wind taping has been done properly, you get a very strong strap to secure the lids of containers.
