How to Pack & Move Chairs and Ottomans

Find out how to pack and move chairs safely and efficiently.

Due to their unusual shape, chairs can be tricky to pack and move. Folding chairs, dining room chairs, upholstered chairs, and big overstuffed chairs are each handled differently.

Folding Chairs

Folding chairs don’t normally have to be padded but expensive ones should be wrapped for protection. Also, you may want to pad folding chairs just to protect the other furniture pieces with which they may come into contact on the truck.

In such cases close the chair flat, lay it on a pad and completely shroud it in the protective material.

Once it’s padded, tape it all up well so the pads don’t come loose. Be careful not to get any tape residue on the chair.

A padded folding chair can also be cardboarded or boxed for further protection.

Dining Room Chairs

Dining room chairs with or without arms come in many styles. Some are all wood, some are part wood – part upholstery, and some are all upholstered. Some even have swivels and casters. Because dining room sets are expensive and their pieces are hard to replace, it’s wise to take extra care of each dining room chair.

The following 2 pictures show a completely padded dining room chair with arms.

Notice how thoroughly the chair is padded for optimal protection.

Overstuffed Chairs

Big overstuffed chairs are usually expensive and should always be fully padded and handled with care.

Your first step when packing an overstuffed chair is to center it on a large pad as shown below.

Next, lift the tips of the pad over each arm and tuck them in to hold them until the pad can be taped as shown below.

Then, bring the third tip of the pad up and over the front of the chair.

Don’t forget to apply tape to secure the pad.

As you bring the tape around to the back of the chair lift the fourth tip of the pad up and secure it with the tape as shown in the pictures below.

Two passes of tape around the chair are enough to secure the bottom pad.

Now drape another pad centered over the top of the chair as shown in the picture below.

Then, pull up and square off the excess portion of the pad on each side of the chair as shown in the 5picture sequence below.

Next, pull the excess front of the pad on each side of the chair and square it off as shown below.

Finally, wrap as much tape around the rest of the chair as you feel is necessary to fully secure the pads for carrying.

Overstuffed furniture can be easily damaged or soiled during a move. If it’s of a light color, just the sweat from the mover’s hands can make it dirty.

So, it’s best to first wrap overstuffed chairs in plastic wrap which will protect them from moisture and then pad the pieces as was done above for full protection. The pads can go right over the plastic wrap and be secured with tape. Remember – do not let the tape come into contact with the chair, only with the pads, the plastic wrap, and the other tape strips.

Below is a picture of a professional mover easily carrying a fully padded overstuffed chair on his back ( notice that even the bottom is padded) by only gripping the securely taped pad at the top of the chair. He can risk carrying the chair this easy way because he knows the chair will not slip out of the pads as he grips them.

Ottomans

Ottomans are handled similarly to overstuffed chairs. Just center the furniture on a pad and lift up and tape the sides of the pad in order to fully wrap the piece, as shown in the picture sequence below.

It’s advisable to plastic wrap an ottoman to better protect it from moisture and dirt.
